First laid out in 1817 as part of the original fort, the 21-acre Fort Smith National Cemetery hosts a number of historic grave sites as well as a memorial to Unknown Confederate Dead. The cemetery rests just off the Arkansas River in Fort Smith, creating a beautiful and quiet atmosphere. The most famous interments at this cemetery are those of the "hanging judge" Isaac C. Parker and Brigadier General William O. Darby, leader of Darby's Rangers.
